Online hotel reviews - good thing or bad!

This morning an email appeared in my inbox. It was from Tripadvisor - a very well known travel website. The catchy heading said the following: 'Hotel Horror Stories'. Let me declare an interest - I have a B&B in Southern Spain but up until now have not experienced a bad review. But back to my main point. One of the 'horror stories' concerned the lack of a sea view. The hotel, it would appear, was not on the seafront. The complaintant however, expected such a view - many of us do. The upshot of it all was a rating given of 1 out of 5. I don't know the hotel and perhaps the complaint was legitimate but looking at the story further I was struck by the following. There were a further 5 reviews below the one already mentioned. Off these - three gave a rating of 5 out of 5; the other two 4 out of 5. This got me thinking. Six reviews, five positive and one negative. Could the good reviews be so far from the truth? Perhaps the original complaintant had too high an expectation. He admits the hotel was only 500 yards from the seafront. But a preconceived idea of sitting on his balcony with the sea lapping only feet away did not occur. This therefore destroyed, in his own mind, any merits the hotel might have had. My conclusion, I'm sure online hotel reviews have their place. Don't, however, rely only on one. If the overriding impression from reviews is favourable, go with that. Who knows perhaps the complainant had a disagreement with his wife on the day of arrival and no hotel on earth could have satisfied. Only a thought. |
